Peter Rees was born in 1966 at the US Naval Weapons Test Center at China Lake California. His father is a control engineer and professor of Electrical engineering at University of NSW Australia and his mother is a PhD in mycology and former lecturer in microbiology. Peter's brother is a cardiologist/ physician.
Peter is the black sheep of the family. Not only is he the only member of his family without a doctorate... He also works in the media! Currently, Peter is the executive producer and creator of Mythbusters, for Beyond Television, distributed in the USA by The Discovery Channel, and currently airing around the globe. He also has been a writer, producer, 2nd camera operator, science advisor, graphic illustrator and post producer for the series.
Peter has a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in English and Historical Archaeology from Sydney University in Sydney, Australia. He also has a post graduate diploma in Environmental Studies from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. Besides all that, he also is a graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, and a registered forklift driver. He has also worked in catering, art sales, the outdoor industry, historical archaeology and as a museum guide and lecturer. Peter has twelve years of experience (so far) in science televison programming, including: 1990-1991 When the War Came to Australia 1994-1995 Flight Over the Equator 1994 The Big Byte 1994-1997 Beyond 2000, Field Producer 1995 In the Footsteps of Champagne Charlie 1997 Independence From Cancer 1998 Pleasure Power, Securing the Future 1999 Stings, Fangs and Spines I, Birds of Prey, Primate Rescue, Perfect Partners 2000 Great Balls of Fire 2000-2001 Stings, Fangs and Spines, II, III, IV, V 2001-2002 Skullduggery 2001-2002 Born Against the Odds 2002-2003 Mythbusters, Producer, Director, Writer 2003-Present: Mythbusters, Executive Producer

He has filmed in more than 20 countries, including Argentina, The Bahamas, Brazil, Finland, India, Israel, Mexico, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nepal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, and Thailand. In 1993, he and fellow filmmaker/ adventurer Peter Coleman, who is also a cameraman for Mythbusters, were chosen to both participate and create a documentary film about the international travel/adventure race, The Footsteps Challenge, which entails circling the globe without the aid of powered flight. http://www.lookfilm.com.au/03filmsa/lkf0360.htm In spite of their extra filming duties, they won the race in 104 days! Peter has interests in sailing, sea kayaking, and, it seems, house renovations. It's also obvious he has a very well developed sense of humor, something that has become evident through the type of editing and writing done for the show. And, sorry ladies, he too is taken. When not on location in San Francisco, California USA for the show, he calls Sidney, Australia home. Mythbusters was brewing in Peter's head for 5 years before he approached Jamie about doing the show. Now working on it's 3rd season with at least another to come, Peter feels he's got a good sense of what can and can't be true in the urban legend world.....and what it is about the human mind that compels some people to perpetuate myths. While perhaps not the nicest person when cajoling folks to do his bidding,("Do it now!(Christine!)), or photographing the Mythbusters crew in awkward poses while busting myths(You know which picture I'm talking about, Peter!), he's managed to assemble a very hard working devoted cast & crew that by their own admission have a blast doing the show, and impress all who have met and worked with them with their professionalism and consideration. With all their humor and talent, may there be many more years of busting myths to come, with Peter egging them on!
