Episode: MythBusters Revealed Original Air Date: April 6, 2005 Myths: No Myths this episodes is backstage with MythBusters
This episode is highly visual and requires a transcript to do it justice. This episode guide should only serve to inform the reader about the episode.
The episode starts out with Jamie stating that the editors already show arguments, accidents and the times things go wrong. Adam says this episode is to take that one step further to show new footage of bloopers and insights from Adam, Jamie and the crew.
Science
Adam and Jamie are builders, which does not make them scientists. As Adam puts it, the Mythbusters' approach to science is collective ignorance and much of it is his, Jamie's and the producer's collective ignorance. What they try to do is eliminate pockets of collective ignorance.
An example of that was during the free energy myth: They ordered several devices off of the Internet and the first device that they built didn't make the cut. Adam also almost electrocuted himself on a device that was supposed to suck power from radio waves.
Jamie sums up the science by saying that if they knew what they were doing it wouldn't be interesting. He says they would be reading something off of a chart and that would be boring. Instead they are trying to figure stuff out and learn in the process and it is a lot of fun.
Adam & Jamie's Relationship
Mythbusters is also about the curious chemistry between Adam and Jamie.
Tory says he has known Adam for eight years and Adam has always acted like there is a camera crew following him at all times. He says Jamie is like a machine and he is abnormally strong, which may be why he likes to build robots. It's like he's building little friends that he can control. Adam and Jamie also can bring out the worst in each other sometimes.
Kari says that Adam is the troublemaker and he starts the practical jokes. Jamie is distinct with the beret and the walrus mustache. She also says that Jamie is an easy target as the cast and crew copy his voice and mannerisms.
Jamie says that he enjoys a good prank or two, but he and Adam have come to an understanding that it is not a good idea to prank each other too often. Adam is coordinated, he can juggle, build delicate parts, but Jamie wants to put him in a box as he tends to break stuff. He also says that Adam and the producers like to poke fun of him to get his goat.
According to Adam, Jamie can be long-winded and is like a 'word vampire', sucking the energy out of you.
Killing Time
Tory says that there are a lot time constraints. They are under pressure and every once and a while they like to let loose.
Kari says that between takes they have to let loose. She also says she can do a perfect peacock call.
From watching this segment the viewer will find that chicken impressions are popular and Adam likes to stick things up his nose.
Cleanliness
Jamie is very clean and wears white shirts. He also likes his shop clean. He even recites a long list of offenses that have occurred. His observation is that Adam is always filthy and he is always clean.
Kari agrees. She says some are cleaner than others. Tory tends to clean up and Jamie is neurotic about cleaning up, but Adam is like the Tasmanian Devil of filth.
Bad Takes
Mythbusters is unscripted and sometimes ad libbing isn't the way to go. An early problem was cell phones ringing during takes. Each offender had to buy the cast and crew a case of beer for each offense. Adam admits that if he were to buy a case beer for each of his offenses, the crew would be drunk all the time. So he just buys a couple of cases every couple of weeks. Tory agrees. He thinks the reason Adam always gets busted is because he likes to talk.
As Jamie acts rather smug about never having to buy a case of beer, his cell phone rings. He also says he appreciates the fact that the editors make him look good.
Other problems are nature, props and animals.
Safety First
There are two members of the team to make sure nobody gets hurt. One is Buster. The other is the safety officer - Jamie.
Jamie says safety is not a joke and they try to minimize risk. He also says that there is a conflict between being a builder and the safety officer.
No Pain, No Gain
This segment is dedicated to Adam, who hurts himself a lot.
Peter says that Adam is a disaster area.
Tory says that Adam acts before he thinks and is fast, sometimes too fast.
Adam says that there are a lot of shots of him falling over because he falls over a lot. He also notes that there is little sympathy for him. |
