Original Air Date: February 23, 2005

Myths: Salsa Escape, Cement Removal

Myth: The myth is that Juan Lopez escaped a Mexican prison in 1996 using salsa to dissolve his cell bars.

Christine and Scotty build a concrete block wall with 6 windows with different types of bars. The guys set up various windows with salsa and control sets with equivalent acidity and salinity. Adam and Jamie use two additional windows to compete to see who can dissolve the bars first.

Adam's attempts include using the electricity from the cell light to to use electrolysis, which fails because he is using AC currant. He then cheats, using a vacuum motor to make a drill which fails, and is later described by Adam as "the most frightening thing ever". His last attempt used a silk shirt wet with pee as seen in the Jackie Chan movie. The shirt tears instead of bending the bars.

Jamie decides to cheat by claiming to have been given a radio for good behavior. He removes the DC transformer to make his own electrolysis device which does work and dissolves the metal bar because it uses DC rather than AC currant. After 4 months Jamie's bar was nearly completely dissolved. It was further determined that the salsa control test(without electricity at all) had also corroded the bar 8/1000th of an inch making the myth PLAUSIBLE.

Myth: Can you remove cement from the inside of a cement truck using explosives?

Guests and Experts:

Ron Nunez VP of Pacific Cement who supplies two cement trucks and cement

Jack Morrocco pyro-technician

Carson Hill Rock Products who allowed the use of their quarry to blow up the truck

Phil Ross Calavera County Deputy

Joe Konefal Incedent Commander

Frank Doyle from the FBI

Quotes: After looking around the quarry, Jamie "Where'd it go?" Adam answering "I left it RIGHT here!" and Jamie's "I don't like this one, I wanna blow up THAT one!"

After a mix-up which involved getting a cement truck half-filled with set concrete, they got a 2nd truck which had dried cement layered on the inside. The pyrotechnician starts out with cherry bombs and slowly moves up until they determine that a half stick of dynamite does in fact remove a lot of the slag. Myth Plausible. However even a full stick doesn't budge the half-full truck's load of cement. They decide that they will destroy the half-full truck using 850 lbs of commercial blasting agent. Supervised by several authorities(including the FBI) and watching from outside a 1 mile exclusion zone, the Mythbusters have their largest explosion ever. There was near nothing recognizable left of the truck.

Final Quote: Jamie "This had nothing to do with the myth. This was just a big boom."
